Thirty kilometres sound of Darwin you come to a turn off to Howard Springs this little oasis offers a variety of activities for people of all ages.

Starting with the Howard Springs Nature Park a place where you can feed huge barramundi swimming howard springs housearound in the natural springs to looking at all the different diverse habitats over the 230ha including monsoon forest, extensive swamps and riverine areas. These areas provide valuable wildlife habitats, especially for Magpie Geese, Whistling Ducks, Radjah Shelducks and Pygmy Geese which inhabit the areas. There are lots of shady areas in the picnic area to relax or take a swim in the natural springs and for the toddlers there is a kiddie’s pool provided.

In Howard Springs there is a great little pub for the adults to relax and enjoy a cold drink or two with the locals or enjoying one of the fantastic counter meals in the freshly renovated outdoor uncover area. While playing a few games of keno or laying a few bets on the tab. Mean while the kids are not forgotten in this little pub with and outdoor playground, to help kids burn off some of the energy they well known for.

There is also Jenny’s Orchid Farm for the people who just love their gardening and flowers with over five acres of stunning tropical orchids to browse over you are sure to find something that will look good in your own piece of paradise.

For the people who enjoy a bit of hunting you also have the Howard Springs Hunting Reserve. The Reserve is located to the East of Darwin and to the North of the Howard Springs Nature Park. The Reserve can be accessed from the Gunn Point Road shortly after crossing the Howard River. The final approach to the Hunting Reserve is along gravel roads and dirt tracks. The Reserve is accessible during the dry season only. Once the wet season sets in, the tracks are impassable and extremely slippery as the area is inundated.

Outside the hunting season there are opportunities for fishing and wildlife observation. Bird watching on the receding marshes and swamps at the end of the wet season can be rewarding as a large variety of species can be seen, including brolgas, saurus cranes, jabiru and species of duck.

So there is something for everybody at Howard Springs so come and stay and have a look you might just be surprised at what you find in this little oasis just 30km’s outside Darwin.
